Cairns Nemrod, 1 November, 2008

It was a choppy rugged bash across the cow paddock to Arlington Reef on Saturday morning. The great local boats made available by Bruce Mortley, Sid Caswell, Barry Wilson, Keith Seekee and Gerry Hill made the rough going a pleasure. More so for the fourteen Townsville participants who won the day. The team of Dave Welch, Craig Buckingham, Andreas Severati and Ryan Ellery managed 3505 points to out score the Cairns locals Sid Caswell, Marc Richards, Kevin Ranger and Keith Seekee by just 180 points.

The milky green water was productive for some with people typically landing a common coral trout and black spot tuskfish for the day among others. Several quality black spot tuskfish up to 7.5 kg were landed and crayfish to 3.5 kgs. In total 18 species were landed including a passionfruit trout, red emperor and a black wrasse. Sid Caswell took out the meritorious fish award with his 7 kg mangrove jack. Great work Sid and congratulations!

Dave Welch from Townsville took out the honours on the day being a clear leader with 11 species and 1340 points. Next closest was Sid Caswell with 1040 and 8 species using his local knowledge to his advantage as did Marc Richards scoring third place. Larnie Linton took out the female division with 265 points. The complete table of points shown below. Well done to everyone who competed and thanks to Aaron for acting as safety diver / driver for the day.

Around $2000 worth of prizes were up for grabs and some great awards were won including many gift vouchers from local companies such as Spear and Dive "Spearfishing specialists" and Airsure as well as Aquasports & Dive Townsville. Marc Richards donated a Great Australian Shark Count Torelli soft cell wet suit worth $465. A $150.00 Spear and Dive gift certificate was donated generously by Viridian glass who has been a regular supporter of the Cairns Nemrod for many years. A further thank you goes to Bransfords Discount Tackle for their contribution and a much appreciated thanks to the AUFQ Spearfishing Commission for their generous donation of a $100.00 gift certificate.

A big thank you to all the participants for making the day such a success. To Marc Richards, Aaron Odell, Keith Seekee, Barry Wilson and all the others for organising the event. Thanks also to the boat owners that made the day possible and to Sid for the use of his beautiful house for the weigh in and presentation. Thanks to all those who filleted and donated their fish to the meals on wheels. Looking forward to seeing you all again next year!!
